LIFESTYLE: 8 Tips from the founder, Jessica Marcone

Here are few tips that I have picked up over the years that help me maintain a healthy lifestyle (and promote optimal aging):

1 Take 1 multi-vitamin every day. I was sitting in a Psychology course a few years ago (Adulthood and Aging) and in our very first lecture, the professor said to us that if we start taking multivitamins we would significantly increase our ability to age healthy and optimally. I literally went to Thrifty’s the very next day. Now, I rarely get sick and I feel great knowing that I am getting the proper amount of vitamins in my body.

2 Wear sunscreen. I know you probably hear this from everyone, but this is seriously one of the best (and cheapest) anti-aging tips. I always make sure to wear SPF 60 on my face (La Roche Posay SPF 60 face moisturizer), and SPF 30 on my body. You can buy body moisturizers from virtually anywhere that have SPF incorporated into the lotions.

3 Quit smoking. Right now. No excuses.

4 Do a physically active recreational activity at least twice a week. Whether it is Yoga, Running, Swimming, Barre Class, Rock Climbing, going to the Gym, or Salsa Dancing, make sure to incorporate physical activity into your schedule twice a week. This will help boost your mood, energy levels, and all around well-being!

Replace 95% of juice, soda, beer, liquor, and coffee with WATER. Buy a stainless steel water bottle, and fill it today. Not only will you be cleansing your body properly, but you will help keep our environment less wasteful too.

6 Read a book. Exercising your brain, is just as important as exercising your body. Reading is an excellent way to practice staying focused and alert. Pay attention to detail, and enjoy a good book. (Recommendations: Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts, 3 Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson, The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, and Things I Wish My Mother Had Told Me by Lucia van der Post).

7 Relax. Stress is a major contributor to poor health. Find time to RELAX. Take a bath, go for a walk, meditate, write, do a puzzle. Do whatever it takes to calm your mind and body down so that you are able to live out your day-to-day life with less worry and anxiety. SO important!

Sooth your muscles. Balsamka is a soothing muscle balm and a natural alternative to tiger balm which you can massage on the muscle or joint every night before bedtime to relieve your pain locally and encourage healing. Balsamka contains menthol, clove oil and camphor.

    1. Great article. However, I know that for me, I do not always get the proper nutrients my body requires on a day-to-day basis. Maybe I should have been more specific, I would recommend organic, natural multivitamins. Not synthetic multivitamins. I also noticed that a lot of the data in this article was “observational”, not necessarily factual. I am not promoting the use of energy supplements or anything like this, but taking an all-natural multivitamin.

      Within the vast array of labels, there are basically just three categories of multivitamins. Those made of:

      * 100% synthesized chemical “isolates” – BAD
      * Synthesized chemical “isolates” mixed with token amounts of whole foods – BAD
      * 100% whole food nutrients (preferably organic)—your best choice, and very rare to find – GOOD

      American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 2003, researchers from Cornell University discovered that less than 1% of the total antioxidant activity of apples comes from vitamin C—or ascorbic acid—the remaining 99% comes from the remaining matrix of phenolic compounds, flavonoids, and other phytonutrients found in the whole fruit – which is available in all-natural multivitamin forms.

      Hope this helps!
