HEALTH: The Barefoot Running Trend

Barefoot running is a “new” phenomenon that is sweeping the running clinics by storm. But how “new” is the idea of running barefoot? I have personally made the switch from an extremely supportive running shoe to a low-profile, flexible barefoot trail running shoe and trainer, and I can honestly say that my feet have never felt more comfortable! As a precaution, this switch has to be gradual. Do not run long distances with a barefoot runner right away. Consult with your local running shoe clinic before making the switch.

These are my two favourite videos to date. The first video is a TED talk by Christopher McDougall. In this video, McDougall answers the question “Why does my foot hurt?”. McDougall set off to find a tribe of the world’s greatest distance runners and learned their secrets. In the process, McDougall shows us that everything we thought we knew about running is wrong.

The second video is David Suzuki’s “The Perfect Runner”. How did our ancestors survive the shift from trees to land?  How did Homo sapiens evolve to dominate the planet?  How did our ancestors hunt before they developed weapons? The answer, you will be amazed to learn, is that humans became nature’s perfect endurance runners.  With a skill that evolved far earlier than the development of our powerful brains, our African ancestors had the ability to outrun all animals around them, allowing them to endure and ultimately thrive.
